Bergman resigns as Bellmont's coach
A little over six months after guiding the Bellmont Braves to the Class 3A state championship, coach Toney Bergman announced his resignation on Tuesday night (June 1, 2009).
Bergman was recently reassigned to teach outside the high school, and he cited that as the reason for his resignation.
"While I could coach (without being in the high school), it would not be to the standard that you have come to expect and deserve," Bergman said in a statement issued to the media last evening. "To be the high school football coach, while teaching at the elementary school, would take too much time away from my family, the program, and you, the players."
Last year, Bergman's Braves finished the season with a 14-1 record after winning the school's first-ever sectional, regional, semistate and state titles. The Braves' Class 3A coronation came at Lucas Oil Stadium with a dominating 28-14 performance against Evansville Memorial.
Bergman logged a 46-46 in eight seasons as the Braves' bench boss. Bellmont suffered through back-to-back, one-win seasons prior to Bergman's appointment as head coach in 2001.
